You can't fight trolls by responding to them. The word "troll" is used because of the similarity to trolling a baited line behind a fishing boat, not because of any similarity to a mythical figure. The bait is the provocative comment; gullible users that respond to it are the catch the troller hopes to haul in. Thus, the expression, "Don't feed the trolls."

To participate in these forums, you must agree to abide by its published Terms of Use. Responding to trolls in any way other than to dispute an inaccurate statement made about a technical issue (that is an acceptable issue as defined in the "Submissions" section) would violate these terms. That means any comments about the person making the disputed statement are violations & may be removed or edited by the moderators if deemed sufficiently disruptive to a legitimate technical discussion.

Moreover, the moderators have absolute authority in determining what to remove or who to take action against, & may do so for any reason they see fit. This is clearly explained in the last clause of the ToU:

"Apple reserves the right to delete any Submission, or take action against any account, at any time, for any reason."

You agreed to be subject to these limitations when you signed up to post in these forums. If you no longer find this acceptable, then your only recourse is not to post here anymore.

R C-R thanks, weighted, clear and calm.

sorry about upping this, but seen thread just today, so...

at first - jimthing, thanks about support - but calm down, all thing doesn't deserve it, really. I'll be glad to answer if you still have any questions i can answer - just PM or something

at second - I'm the person, who's posts was claimed "out of TOU" in mentioned thread. I'm far from complain - I'm moderator myself (not here) and I know how it goes. I'm just getting fun from the fact that last NOT deleted thing is absolutely offtopic, technically incorrect and finishes with (inapropriate) "blame Apple" phrase ))))))))

I'm really curious why moderators did not delete 3 more posts.....

Actually exactly that idiotic "blame Apple" got me up to bashing throll - and what I don't get is - why moderators deleted all thing exept the (offtopic, non-technical, incorrect, arrogant to Apple itself) post that initiated mess.

at third - program in question, "xxx enabler", actually is on borderline. Program itself does not violate anything. The person who use it on his own copy of software may or may not violate something, it depends on local law. similar case - legality of jailbreak on iOS. BUT. Posts deleted had nothing to do with said program - exept my words that i was involved in it's creation somehow. AND posts talking about said program are still on thread and on many other threads here.

BTW, high-pointed posts here remainds me of sadly famous "I did not read the book, but my opinion is..." political anecdote from 1980-s USSR

Could be because nobody reported it.  After a thread degenerates to a certain point, regulars who are likely to report it are likely to go elsewhere, and thus not be around to hit the report button.

Another possibility is that they left it as a "honeypot" to attract trolls and focus their attention in one obviously-nonsense thread.

  • dm_dimon Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

you still didn't read read that thing, do you? How you can assume that it get somewhere or is obviosly-nonsence? Don't you personally want to get 500 Gbps speeds instead of 200 at best on your mac's drive for same money? Is this out of interest and importance for you?

What the lovely people you are. Bashed to death the man who just said that he feels unfair. Don't even looking what he's talking about.

I was on the forum in the threads jimthing started complaining about. The guy he mentioned can still be seen once in a while in other threads, and jimthing is right about him. BUT reading this threads I come to think that jimthing and some others are twins, or even aliases. There is NOT ONE contribution in this thread. I think the patience of some of us is consumed.

  • thomas_r. Level 7 Level 7 (29,950 points)

No, I didn't, and really have no interest in doing so.  I simply gave you a couple common reasons that moderators here don't remove bad posts.

As to "bashing" someone without reading the post he's complaining about, note what I already said in a previous post: "It doesn't take seeing the conversation to be able to disapprove of someone's current behavior."  The "conversation", in this case, meaning the thread that jimthing was ranting about the moderation of.

  • dm_dimon Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

    2 LexSchellings.

I've seen you there, btw ) But THIS thread - reread the topic - begun with a question - how do I ta-ta-ta... what is absolutely perfectly in all the rules. And instead answering the topicstarter question almost all started doing what? beating down the asked one. How it is inline with highly proclaimed TOU? Who exactly to blame about no contribution here? Who exept topicstarter and R C-R was REALLY on topic here? Nobody. Including me and you.

  • dm_dimon Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

Thomas, I don't know what the kind of person you are, and really have no interest knowing that.  I simply giving you a common reason to think a bit about your behavior.

As to "blaming" someone without knowing who he is and so, note what You already said in a previous post: "It doesn't take seeing the conversation to be able to disapprove of someone's current behavior."  The "conversation", in this case, mean all yours personality that I did not know. All your goodness, wisdom, and zillion more good things of you.

Your judgement of person while not even bothering to click on link just to see, what he is ranting about, clearly shows that you better not to  be real judge. As sidething - no one with scientific/engeneering mind will behave like you here and now. Thus the next question - what kind of questions here you can credibly answer? Surely not ones that need thoroughtful check of lot of sources and furthermore, some research.

Do you get the situation from my point of vision?

  • thomas_r. Level 7 Level 7 (29,950 points)

I simply giving you a common reason to think a bit about your behavior.

MY behavior?  You make me laugh, sir.  Especially given some of the things you follow that up with.

Your judgement of person while not even bothering to click on link just to see, what he is ranting about, clearly shows that you better not to  be real judge.

When one is commenting on a rant, one does not need to have detailed knowledge on what started the rant.  I commented about nothing other than his behavior HERE, on this thread.  If you were observed in the act of committing murder, it does not take knowledge of the circumstances that led you to commit murder to denounce the act.

As to the rest of your insults, I wonder what you're trying to achieve.  If you believe your opinion makes even the remotest difference to me, you couldn't be more mistaken.  You're painting everyone else a pretty clear picture of yourself, however.

  • dm_dimon Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

I'll try to simplify it for better understanding.

Person started a thread with question - how can I communicate to moderation system here? And in post he tried to explain what about he wants communicate. Yes, he was a bit overheated then, so what?

Can you tell me why instead of answering that questions or just passing by you (among the others) begin to tell that person that he is bad himself in such and such ways? Does he asked you about that? Who you are to judge him? You here behave the exactly same way. Instead of answering you injuring him (in more or less polite way, yes). You have something to say ON THREAD? No? just pass it by.

And I have no insults. Just some 'unfair' feeling, not about moderation, but about this thread.

ps. ans as here are just 2 (two) posts on topic here - I'm feeling free also be absolutely offtopic

How were any of my posts off-topic?, before R C-R entered I said the same things to jimthing, ignore the other creep, who had apparently been banned, (and may have been yet again in another thread) and move on.

I did read the original thread where your post was excised. I have no knowledge of the tool in question. But as I've previously stated only the moderators here can decide what to take out and they chose to take yours out.

You apparently missed one intervening thread. The aforementioned creep came to this forum and entered a post regarding bad behavior and an illegal posting, I guess referring to you. jimthing immediately entered that post yelling at the OP, he yelled back, and the thread quickly disintegrated. The moderators apparently banned the other guy do to that thread and sent jimthing a letter warning him that his posts violated the ToU, which they clearly did. He then started this thread and continued with his rant and in all appearance was banned for his efforts. It does not matter what the other guy did in the thread that was deleted, jimthing received his letter based upon THAT thread, not the one you keep referring to, and he chose to ignore the warning. His choice.

    >How were any of my posts off-topic?

topicstarter asked exact question - how he can complain about moderation, and in next post he pointed that he want due process.

The only that matters - asked question and answer to it. All other things are irrelevant (and offtopic).

R C-R post clearly shows that topicstarter have nothing to complain about and post deletion in mentioned thread was absolutely fair with forum rules, which topicstarter accepted:

"This is clearly explained in the last clause of the ToU:

"Apple reserves the right to delete any Submission, or take action against any account, at any time, for any reason."

You agreed to be subject to these limitations when you signed up to post in these forums. If you no longer find this acceptable, then your only recourse is not to post here anymore."

Can you show me just ONE more post here on-topic? All three pages go around what topicstarter should or should not do, what person he is or is not or was before and such intriguing and interesting things - and have absolutely nothing to do with asked question.

ANY person can ask - and get (or not get) an answer, not a discussion about his behavior. Even prisoner in jail have protection of law, isn't he?

Did you give jimting an answer to his question?

In case it's not clear, in all this back and forth, the answer to the OP's questions is this is not a court of law and there is no such concept as due process. The actions of the Hosts are final. People have posted complaints about moderation in this forum. There have been occasions on which the hosts have changed their minds. They are, however, under no obligation, according to the TOU, to do so. The Hosts do appear to try to moderate with a light hand but, as they have stated, it's more of an art than a science. In the end, this forum is run for Apple's benefit and by their rules. If you don't like the decision or the system, your option is to go elsewhere.

Is there really anything else that needs to be said?

  • unconchuir Level 1 Level 1 (85 points)

I was able to complain about something similar here: http://www.apple.com/support/feedback/

    exactly my point.
