Have you installed any security/anti-theft software? I have VUWER and it takes a snapshot whenever the system first starts up. What's in your login items? Skype/Yahoo!/iChat?
Turn on the Firewall.
System Preferences > Security > Firewall > Click the Lock and unlock everything > turn on firewall.

Little Snitch is a good application that can block incoming and out going connections.
Make sure that screen sharing etc. is off
System Preferences > Sharing > Uncheck everything there unless you need it.
