Color Bars and tone in FCP X?

Question

Color Bars and tone in FCP X?

Just downloaded FC"P" X and having a look around I cant find Color Bars or Tone anywhere...?

Did a quick search on the help... but couldn't find anything.

Surely I must be missing something here - they must be available right!!?

I know I could output some from my deck or earlier version of FCP but thats not the point really is it. What possible reason on God's green earth could there be for omitting something so simple. Sorry but most del specs (even for digital tapeless) require bars and tone.

Can someone point me in the right direction - they must be in here somewhere.

I'm at work at the moment (Windows!) and I'm going through the Ripple tutorials, which show a 'Bars' and 'Countdown' generator (I think). It could be that they produced them in Motion 5 and then published them to FCPX, so, they may not be there. Sorry. I'm going home soon so I'll take a look in an hour or so. 😊

Its not that important.

Just downloaded it to see if it was a sbad as the **** storm on the internet says it is.

Signs not good so far... But will keep an open mind for now.

Can I really only retime my clip by preset multiples now 2x, 4x, 8x etc?

Really, really hoping thats sarcasm. As yes omitting b+t is a hilarious mess up on Apples part.

If not I can forward you the Beam TV specs I often have to deliver to here in London at a professional post house as a senior editor.

If I were to use FC X for a delivery then that would be the way to go I suppose.

Or generate b+t on the deck and ingest to the computer and then import to fcp.

Dont think I'll be using FC X for anything in the short term though. Just playing around. See where it goes.

So many odd decisions - why get rid of a perfectly good, simple feature like "make freeze frame" - I know you can do it using the retime tool now but its a round about way of doing things.

Sorry if sounded rude - there are so many crazy Apple fan boys willing to jump on people here at the slightest hint of criticism :-)

No, that's not true. Those are starting points. You can then drag the clip inside the timeline and change the timing to whatever you want (based on percentage).

What if I have a specific percentage I need to go to...? Is that possible.

To give an example, recently, on a music promo we shot the whole thing at 120fps and then in post some clips I worked out the percentage I needed to get them to play at actual life speed and then applied that percentage. I didnt want to change the length of the clip in the timeline just the playback speed (ripple timeline was unchecked).

Before the process was option J, type new speed, uncheck ripple timeline. Done.

Hmm, I think you would need to put the clip onto a new storyline. That should avoid rippling the main storyline content.

I've seen the colour bars. a wild guess is the generators, or somewhere hiding close by...

Tried the generators - aprt from "Blobs", "Counting", "Curtains", "Shapes" (very useful) etc cant see it.

Any ideas on tone?

yes, you can go to a specific percentage. you can't type it in, but dragging (if zoomed in close enough) gives you single percentage granularity. watch the video! 😉
