Can I shrink image sizes when sync to iPad?

I have a lot of large files (most TIFF) that take up far more space than my iPad has.

I was wondering, when I sync the iPad is there any way to make it convert the images to a smaller format (perhaps like JPEG or something else) that still looks good on the iPad automatically?

Or do I have to export all the images in a smaller format, re-import to iPhoto, then sync?
