What does it mean when my macbook shuts down and the comes back on with a folder/ question mark in it in the middle and the whole screen is white?

Yes, it is blinking. I have tried the pram but I'm still getting the same thing. When I purchased it, it shipped without any disks.
Open Text Edit. Drag the url from your browser address bar to a new Text Edit window. It should format the link for you. Then just drag the formatted link to a reply window.
You don't have to use HTML to do this.

hmmmmmm all Macs come with Mac machine specific install discs.
Try starting up while holding dow the Option key. Theoretically, you should see the Startup Manager window where you can select the startup disk.
Where did you purchase it from? All new MacBooks ship with the disks as far as I know...

You're going to need the disks, if not now then sometime: you can contact Apple and get a replacement set for a modest fee.

The flashing question mark on startup can mean several things. One your Mac can't find a System Folder to startup from (thus the Startup Manager / Option key boot), or the hard drive has failed.
You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.
Yes, I bought it used but she had only turned it on twice and just thought the operating system was too confusing. She decided to buy another Dell instead. She let it go for $900. Its got the 500ram and the 4GB, I thought i was getting a good deal 😟 It has been doing great until it just froze up on me so I forced a shut down. When i powered up again that's when I got flashing question mark. Thanks everyone for the advise. I will probably just drive the 2hrs to the closest Mac rep for additional help in person.
