Why won't my headphones work?

Out of nowhere, my headphones won't work when I plug them into my Macbook Pro. The sound works fine with the external speakers, even with my headphones plugged in. I've tried several headphones and none of them work, so it has to be something with my Mac. Can anyone help?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

If you see a red light in the headphone jack, that's the tiny mute switch. To fix it, you're going to have to plug a 3.5mm jack into it, and pull it out. Repeating up to 20 X. Maybe give it the ever so slightest of jiggles to slide the switch back into place.

If that doesn't work, use a toothpick, but not something that's conductive.
