Oversize drive: Will it work?

I have a Powerbook G4 titanium 800 mhz laptop. The internal disk has crashed. It is a 40 GB drive.

I want to replace it with a 160 GB drive that I have on the shelf. But due to the complexity of the installation

I don't want to just "try it".

I know that the ATA bus limits the disk size to 128 GB. But can I put the big disk in anyway and use it? Or

will the system just fail to operate at all?

You can use the large HD, however, only 128GB will be useable. Partitioning won't overcome the 128GB limit.

Here's the step-by-step instructions for replacing the HD.
