Suzanne,

How much space each CD you import into iTunes takes up, depends on what format you are importing the tracks as in iTunes and what bit rate you are setting them at. You can view this information by choosing Edit -> Preferences and then looking for the Import Settings button from under the General Tab.

MP3 files will take up the least amount of space, but some of the audio quality (if that matters to you) will best lost, but you may not even know the difference. The lower the bit rate, the less space a track will take up as well.

In order to sync tracks to your iPod and then remove them from iTunes without having them deleted the next time you connect your iPod, you'll need to enable the Manually manage music and videos option for your iPod in iTunes from under its Summary tab. See this article for more information on manual management.

Once you have added the tracks to your iPod via iTunes, you can safely delete them.

HOWEVER, this means that if something were to EVER happen to your iPod that rendered it unusable, the music you synced to your iPod would be gone for good. Meaning you would have to resync all those CDs back into your iTunes library again. So instead of removing the tracks from your iTunes library to save space, I would invest in an external hard drive of some sort and store your iTunes library there.
