I bought myself an iPad but then realised that I didn't fulfil all of of the things I thought it could, primarily, the quality of Pages. I was just wondering whether it was possible to use the Mac Mini with the iPad, as I don't like cheaper Windows laptops but don't want to splash out on a MacBook. It is the first iPad just to clarify.

Do you mean to use the iPad as a monitor? No. But there are plenty of apps that can do that, but you need a monitor to see you computer when you set it up. Apps such as LogMeIN and Air Display. The quality of those relies on the quality of your network though. It doesn't always look so great.
Yes, an iPad will work with a Mac Mini. If you are buying a used/older model, be sure it comes with Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5) at the least, since that is the minimum that will work with an iPad.

Thank you for the fast response. The thing is, I think the Mac System Requirements is intended for the computer you connect it too. You may be right but I am not sure.

Are you trying to do as gatortribe suggested, use the iPad as a Mini's monitor? Don't, you'll be disappointed and you'll still need some other monitor to set it up before you can use the iPad that way. Recent vintage Minis have HDMI output and can be connected to most HDTV sets (video and audio) with no hassle at all.
I know this isn't relevant as I have the first iPad, but would you be able to connect a Mac Mini with an iPad 2 via HD connection kit.
The HD Connection Kit gets output from an iPad to a TV. It does not get output from some other computer into an iPad.

I'm not sure I'm following this right but I'm assuming you want to present from your iPad and/or control your mini?
There's a couple of options here..
1.) Wait for IOS 5.0 this month. It has Airplay sharing so whatever you do on your iPad can be mirrored on your Mini or other Airplay device
2.) You can use software like iTeleport to control your mini from your iPad

You say that you can mirror what you do on the iPad on the Mac Mini, can that also mean you can mirror what you do on the Mac Mini on the iPad?
iOS 4 has AirPlay too. And you can't mirror your iPad to a Mac Mini, as the Mini is a computer, and not a display. MrRobsta, yes, you can mirror your Mini to the iPad, but it requires an app such as Air Display, or LogMeIn Ignition.
True with iOS4 you're a bit limited but supposedly iOS5 will allow you to Airplay mirror to your ATV so I don't see why you can't mirror onto a Mac Mini. But Air Display or Logmein will work as well. Logmein can be kind of slow since you're going through their gateway and back in your router. So something like TelePort or a VNC client might prove a bit faster.
