Long Sync

Okay, I'm not sure whether this has to do with my Classic, iTunes, or both but sometimes when I hook my iPod up to sync it can takes between five and ten minutes to actually begin the process of syncing. That is definitely not normal. Why might this be happening?

One thing that may be worth noting is that I synchronize through a speaker-dock via a USB cable rather than through an iPod sync cable.
