Q: MTP in OS X?

Hi,

I just purchesed a Sanyo Xacti SH1 HD camcorder and when you plug it into a computer you get the option to use it as a card reader or use MTP (Media Transfer Protocol). When you select MTP on a Windows PC it shows what camera you’re using and battery level etc. But plugged into a Mac the MTP option does nothing.

Is there a way to make the Mac use MTP or will Lion support it?

iMac 20, Mac OS X (10.6.7), 2.16 GHz Core 2 Duo, 2 GB Ram

Lion isn't out yet.  All the features of Lion are listed on and may change when it is released later this month at: http://www.apple.com/macosx/

Contact the camera vendor and ask which Mac OS X versions their camera model is known to support. Also ask in the iMovie forum if it is supported any better through iMovie.

My camcorder works on Mac in Card Reader mode, so I can drag and drop files off of it that way.

I'm just curious if there is a way to make OSX support MTP or if it will in the future as it seems like a better mode as it gives more user feedback.

Being that MTP is a framework for Windows to import to wmv, my guess would be that you won't see it supported natively in OS X.

Most cameras supported on OS X work by connecting a Firewire cable to the DV out of the Camera and import directly into iMovie, or the company provides its own transfer software.

You won't find anyone answering questions about the future here.  Apple strictly forbids speculation on this board, which is user to user.
