Canon ImageClass c2100 Color Laser Printer and OS 10.6

Hi-

I have a Canon ImageClass c2100 Color Laser printer which, as I understand it, shares drivers and some parts with the HP Color LaserJet 8500. I have owned the printer for many years but it hasn't been used since we updated our systems to 10.6. We are on a wired Ethernet network with passive hubs and an Asante Firewall.

After firing up the ImageClass c2100 we do not seem to be able to print. I get the message "cannot connect to printer" or the print process just hangs up. I am looking for some step by step instructions for both the settings on the Canon printer and for the Mac print preferences. For example:

When adding printer:

LPD or IPP? My HP 4050TN works with this at LPD so thats what I have been doing on the Canon

What IP address do I put in there? I see the IP on the printer is set to 192.168.123.169 so I have been using that.

For the driver software I select HP Color LaserJet 8500 as I believe that this worked before.

On the Canon ImageClass c2100 I have the settings as:

TCP/IP - Ethernet - Set to YES

Enable Auto IP - Set to NO

Ethernet IP - 192.168.123.169

Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0

Gateway - 192.168.123.254

Appletalk - Set to YES

If any of you out there are Mac and Canon experts I'd love a hand getting this combo running. Seems a shame to retire this old workhorse when she has lots of pages left in her.

Cheers.

Mac G5, Mac OS X (10.6.7)

In Australia we had the imageRUNNER iR C2100. This machine was an office copier/printer that had a EFI "Fiery" print controller. In the USA, the imageCLASS devices were more the size of personal copiers rather than business copiers, which also used the name imageRUNNER in the US.

Checking the Canon USA web site, I can see that this model as uses the Fiery controller. So for LDP printing you must enter a queue name of print and it must be entered in lower case. I would also suggest using the Generic Postscript driver rather than the LJ8500 (while many HP lasers use Canon engines the HP controller is often different to the Canon). So a summary of adding the print queue to the C2100 is;

Protocol: IP > LPD

Address: 192.168.123.169

Queue: print

Print Using: Generic Postscript

Just with regards to the C2100 IP address, ensure your Mac is also set to the same IP subnet. If you open System Preferences > Network and select what connection your Mac is using, then you can check that the Mac has an IP address of 192.168.123.x (where X is a different number to the printers 169) and the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 and the Gateway (aka Router) is 192.168.123.254. If the Mac is using different addresses to the C2100 then you will have to change the Mac or printer so they can communicate with each other.

Again, thank you for your time. I really appreciate the help. If I could trouble you for one more time.

I tried your suggestions. It seems like I might be getting close but when printing, the printer quickly switches to "Paused" in the print status and I can't seem to get it out of Pause mode. Deleting the file allows the printer to be taken out of Pause mode.

Thanks for the help!

Did you confirm that the Mac and the C2100 can 'see' each other? On the Mac, you can open Network Utility and select the Ping tab. Here you can type the IP address of the C2100, set the number of Pings to 4 and then press the Ping button. If there is working path between the two devices then you should get 4 responses from the C2100 for each ping. If the results show something else then post those responses back here.

The other thing you can do is open Safari and type the IP address of the Mac as the URL. If there is a path between the two devices then this will connect to the internal web page of the C2100. If it doesn't show the internal web page then this also confirms that you have the Mac and the C2100 configured for different networks and this will cause the pausing issue.

If you do get a ping response, or can connect to the internal web page, then the pausing can be a result of the protocol you selected not being available on the C2100. As I mentioned before, for an LPD connection a queue name of print must be entered. But if the LPD/LPR setting is not enabled on the C2100 then this will cause the queue to pause. So you could try creating another queue to the C2100, but this time selecting HP Jetdirect-Socket for the protocol. While LPD can be disabled by default, RAW Port 9100 (which is known as HP Jetdirect-Socket on the Mac) is often on as this is the default protocol used by Windows - and it is important we don't upset Windows users ;-) With Jetdirect you will notice that no queue name is required, so all you need to enter is the IP address and then select Generic Postscript in the Print Using menu.

See how that goes for you....

I think I am getting close with your awesome help. Thanks!

I put the IP into my Safari browser and, sure enough I get the Fiery menu and I am even able to select old print jobs and reprint them. Nifty!

I tried every combination of Protocol (IPP/LDP/HP); Queue (print or blank) and Generic Postscript vs HP CLJ 8500. For each I get either a "Paused" or "Unable to Connect".

One thing I was not able to find is any menu item on the printer that allows me to select LPD/LPR settings. I see these:

TCP/IP - Ethernet - Set to YES

Enable Auto IP - Set to YES

Appletalk - Set to YES

Could the PLD/LPR be called something else?

Thanks again for being so kind on this. I feel like we are making progress!

That is good news that you can connect to the Fiery web page. It confirms that you have a network connection between the two devices so the queue pausing is not a result of the Mac not being able to see the printer.

The LPD/LPR setting is usually under the TCP/IP settings, at least it is with the newer models of Fiery controllers.

Did you try creating another print queue but selecting IP > HP Jetdirect-Socket instead? You can use Generic Postscipt for this queue. I am curious to see if you get the same paused or unable to connect message.

IP>HP Jetdirect - Socket with the IP address, Queue blank and Generic PostScript Printer = Hangs up on "Determining Installable Options" with "Status: Connecting to printer...". I click "Configure" and I can get it to add after that. When testing a printed page the result is "Network Host 192.168.123.169 is busy; will retry in 30 seconds..."

I took another look at the Network Protocol Setup menu on the c2100 and this is how it is set right now (although I have tried lots of combinations):

- TCP/IP Ethernet = Yes

- Enable Auto IP = Yes

- Enable DHCP = Yes

- Auto Gateway = Yes

- Enable Appletalk = Yes

- Enable Novell = No

I have tried many combinations of these settings and various settings on the Mac but not is a one by one systematic way. Do the above look right?

Thanks again for the help!!!

Thank you. That does look correct also. So I am starting to wonder what could be the issue.

Given that your Mac setup looks fine then I want to print a configuration page from the C2100 to be sure that every setting is correct and enabled. So via the copiers touch panel, can you do the following;

  1. Press the Function button
  2. Choose Print Pages
  3. Choose Configuration

This will print the configuration page for the Fiery controller. Under Network > Service you will see LPD and Port 9100. Both of these should be set to Yes.

I printed the configuration page but I don't see anythign that says LPD - perhaps that could be the problem. Under "Network Information" is:

Ethernet Mac Address - XXXX

Ethernet TCP/IP: Enabled - Auto IP: Diabled

- Ethernet TCP/IP Address: 192.168.123.169 (Static)

- Ethernet TCP/IP Subnet: 255.255.255.0 (Static)

- Auto Gateway: Disabled

- TCP/IP Gateway: 192.168.123.254 (Static)

Appletalk: Disabled

Novell: Disabled

SMB: Disabled

I/O Port Setup

Ethernet: Enabled

- Ethernet Speed: AUTO DETECT

Parallel Port: Enabled

- I/O Timeout: 15

- Ignore EOF: Yes

Any clues in there?

If there is no LPD or Port 9100 setting then it is quite possible that this controller did not support those protocols. Yesterday I found the manual for the Color Network Printer Board-B1, which was for the iR C2105, so my reply was based on the info I saw in that Getting Started guide. The iR C2100 used an A1 board and I wasn't able to locate its manuals to confirm what settings it should have. Would you still have the manuals?

If this controller does not support LPD or Port 9100 then we could try enabling SMB and then use the Windows tab of the Add Printer browser on the Mac to connect to the printer. All you will need to do on the copier is set the Workgroup name to workgroup and then give the copier a name, such as Canon. With those two things set you can then browse for the printer by selecting Windows instead of IP when you select to add the printer. One thing to note is that it can take over 30 minutes for the printer to appear after enabling SMB.

The drama continues! ;-)

I do have the manuals but they are of alarmingly little help. You're way better!

I see SMB on the Configuration Page but not on the menu as I scroll through the Network Information options. There is an option for literally everything else on the Configuration printout but not the SMB. I wonder if that is triggered by another menu item. Unfortunately, the manual doesn't seem to reference SMB either.

Any idea how to enable SMB or if it is buried in a menu that is active after enabling something else?

Thanks again!

I have the full set of manuals for the c2100. I wasn't able to find anything in the index or table of contents that was called "Network Print Controller A1".

We have printed to this printer on our network for many years so I assume the network printing is working on the printer - the issue is the upgrades to the Mac OS that seems to be the trouble.

I can scan the manuals for you but I suspect that would take a couple of days to get done.

Thanks again for hanging in there to help me out. This is sure frustrating for me and time consuming for you. Much appreciated!
