Final Cut Pro X doesn't let me save to an external hard drive.

Final Cut Pro X doesn't let me save to an external hard drive but it does let me import from this drive. I need to know how to save my folders to the external and not the internal. iMove and Final Cut Pro 7 both are letting me but not X. I need help.

scpokorney,

FCPX allows you to save to your external drive by going to your Project Library (press CMD 0) and you should see your external drive - you can then drag your timeline from your main drive to your external drive. You'll get a window with three options & another option at the bottom to include rendered files. Hope this helps.

Thanks. I do have another questions. Once I drag my project to an external drive, how do I back up the project file? In FCP7 you could designate what part of the project you wanted where. I used to have all large files, such as media, render files etc on an ext drive, but the actual project file, which was small, on my HD that would be backed up using time machine.

Hope that makes sense. Im trying to have my set ups the same.

I know this comes a couple of years after the original post, but in case anyone else should come along with the same problem, it is possible that if your external drive is not showing up in the Events area of FCPX, but it is mounted on the Mac, then perhaps the permissions are not set correctly. User sumitrana, in another thread, pointed out this permissions issue.

Go to the Finder and select the drive in question. Press Command-I to Get Info. Take a look at the permissions section at the bottom. If your own username is not there with "read and write" ability, then add yourself to the list of permitted users, or at least set yourself to both read and write if you are already there. Don't mess with any other "users" (such as "wheel" or "system" or "everyone").

Then, quit FCPX and eject and remount the drive (I used Disk Utility to do the latter and did a housekeeping Verify on the drive before I remounted just because I could at that point). Fire up FCPX again and all should be well.

Good luck.
