Activity Monitor: Send Signal

Hello everybody.

I noticed in the utility Activity Monitor under the menu View the possibility to Send a signal to a process - previously selected; the menu offers a list of SIGxxx commands, which seem to give the user more choice than just quitting or forcing to quit a process. Does anybody know the meaning and how these options work?

Thanks.
