Hanging as in Frozen? Try zapping the PRAM. Before the apple logo appears, Press Command, Option, P, and R at the same time. That should help.
Things to try,
other forums for using snow leopard and macbook pro; preventative maintenance in the future; disk repair (sometimes you may need stronger 3rd party); Safe Boot for mild issues.
(I cannot for the life of me see resetting pram/nvram being of any help whatsoever, sorry).
