"The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items." This is the message I get once I try to delete an item from the desktop. How can I get around this? Just recently the computer started prompting me to enter my password to move files to the desktop. It seems as if these are correlated.

Give this a try:
To fix Home folder permissions
Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder. At the command line prompt enter or paste the following command line:
sudo chown -R `id -un`:`id -gn` ~
Press RETURN. You will be prompted to enter your admin password which will not be echoed.
If you are trying to delete items, I can teach you a terminal command to do that. But I would need to know where the files are located on your hard disk.
