When I customize the toolbar in Safari, it only shows the changes temporarily. If I quit Safari and reopen it, the toolbar reverts back to how it was before. Any ideas?

Have you by chance installed any third party toolbars?
If not, quit Safari then move the com.apple.Safari.plist file form ~/Library/Preferences to the Desktop.
Relaunch Safari.
Not on purpose. Evernote is in my toolbar and I'm not sure how it got there and I can't seem to get rid of it. I did as you suggested with removing com.apple.Safari.plist and I was able to customize the toolbar, but I still can't get rid of Evernote.
Check System Preferences. Look at the bottom of the pane. Do you see Evernote?
I just installed it so I could find it.
Open a Finder window. Select your Home folder in the Sidebar on the left. Now open the lIbrary folder then the Internet Plug-Ins folder.
Move the Evernote.plugin to the Trash. Restart your Mac. Try Safari.

How to find Evernote useful? Evernote is awesome if you like to "take notes" electronically and if you have more than one computer/device. It syncs across various devices as well as the Evernote servers. So your notes are as close as your smart phone or ANY computer that can connect to the internet. You can print a web page from Safari to Evernote (as a PDF). then add some notes or tags. And it is as if you had a photographic memory. Evernotes is like an external brain.
I just dont understand how to resolve this problem...
