Go in Settings, add keyboard...if i remember correctly you need to add japanese keyboard an emotiji keyboard.
Then when the keyboard pops up you'll be able to switch to you emoji keyboard and start using them!
There is an emoji keyboard included by default with iOS5, no app needed.
Simply go to settings -> General -> Keyboards and add the Emoji keyboard (not Japanese Emoji, just "Emoji"), then a globe icon appears at the bottom of the keyboard, click this and you'll get a choice of smiles.

You've just dug up this thread from 10 months ago. Prior to iOS5 when this thread was last posted to, the Emoji keyboard was only selectable on Japanese iPhones. Various apps just 'enabled' that keyboard on non-Japanese iPhones.
Since iOS5 the built-in Emoji keyboard is available to anyone.
Always helps to check the date of threads you are replying to.

Wrong. Emojii is provided with iOS now. Settings>General>Keyboard>International Keyboards>Add new Keyboard>Emoji
Next time research it before saying iOS does not offer it.
Ok apology because I didn't realize this was that old of a thread.
Did you happen to notice the date of the post in which you're claiming modular was wrong? Did you happen to read Julian's post from today? At the time modular wrote that (July, 2011), the post was absolutely correct, as Julian explains.
Edit: Good of you to apologize. ๐
There are several apps that can add emoticons to text messages and other text fields. Type "emoticons" in the App Store search box.

You could just do it the old fashioned way... Type them. ;-)
Of course, before posting you noticed that this thread is almost a year old, and started well before iOS 5.0 was released, correct?
thanks for the update richard, its useful for many user's regardless of when it was originally asked.
You can either type a colon : and then a ) to make a smile or, go into your keyboard settings, add new keyboard, and then add emojicons or emojies...these have a lot more! ๐
hate when people dig up old threads. lol
It does lead to the occasional bit of awkwardness.
