I have tested with EZ Jim who happens to have an External iSight
He was able to change the Mic to the one in the iSight.

The "internal" iSight shows as Display iSight and the Mic in the Display as Display Audio.
In the above Screen Shot he was using the camera in the Display and hold the External iSight near his face almost like a singer would.
He has FireWire 400 to 800 Adapter which he uses to connect the external iSight.
He tried a few of these as he got different results for some. (Some seem to be OK for Hard Drives but not the iSight)
We think that maybe any adapter you may be using is not passing the Audio properly.
He updated his External iSight to Firmware version 1.0.3 which was available some time ago in Tiger and Leopard as a Standalone but was also triggered by Software Update if the iSight was plugged in.
The Standalone Firmware update in not in Snow Leopard.
