I was trying to back up my music by taking songs from itunes and putting them on my external hard drive. I tansferred over 3,000 songs manually by dragging and dropping. After awhile i couldn't drag and drop any of my music into my folder on my drive or anywhere else on my computer. I have a MacBook Pro from 2008.

You can transfer it from the iTunes file by going to Username>Music>iTunes>iTunes Media>Music
But how can I solve the problem of not being able to drag and drop my music anywhere? Is a matter of just updating my itunes?
I had the same problem as you at one time. I used to have a Samsung phone that I wanted to drag n drop music to. Never found a solution. Then I just sent it over bluetooth, or booted into Windows and did it from there. iTunes may suspect you are sharing your songs with someone else, that might make it enable restrictions.
Do you know if there is a way to fix this so I can keep putting music on my drive?
Unfortunately, no.
you can't do with using itunes, there is a a built-in limit on how many files you can select and drag to copy elsewhere.
if you find your itunes music folder on the hard drive itself, you can copy that directory using the Finder without any limitations.
you should probably configure your external hard drive to use Time Machine to back up your music, if that is indeed your concern.
The directory is (by default) Username>Music>iTunes>iTunes Media>Music

What I usually do is Drag & Drop my Complete iTunes Folder onto my External as a Back Up...

Thats what I do too, but I also rely on the Time Machine back up for that.
Restarting finder solved my problem with not being able to drag and drop music from itunes to another drive.
I was just going through the same thing with my Galaxy Note. A workaround I discovered is creating a new folder on your desktop and dragging your selected songs from itunes there. You then drag the songs from that folder to the device.
Had this maddening problem also. Was able to move the file once I selected go to album after right clicking on the file.
