iPad Frequently goes back to home screen when using Mail or Safari

My iPad (wifi only) running version 4.2.1 FREQUENTLY goes back to the home screen when I using Mail or Safari.

I am currently in a temporary location (rental home) which uses a Belkin Wireless G router. The signal is not the greatest (I get 3-4 bars on my iPad and iMac). My iMac isn't experiencing this problem, however I do notice that web pages load more slowly than when I am at home. FYI, at home I have an Airport Extreme connected wirelessly.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

The apps (mail and Safari) are crashing for some reason. I would start with this.

Double tap the home button to bring up the task bar where all of your recent apps will appear. Hold down on the mail app icon until it wiggles - along with the rest of the icons - and then tap the minus sign in the corner of the icon to cloase the app. Close Safai the same way and continue to close all of the apps in the task bar. Tap the screen above the task bar to return to the home screen.

Now restart your iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider bar appears and slide to shut off. To power up, hold down on the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and then let go of the button. Try Mail and Safari again to see if that helped.

If that doesn't work - reset the iPad. Hold down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. After the iPad has started up, try the apps again.

One last thing you may try for Safari is this ... Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History, Cookies and Cache. Then restart the iPad like I explained above and try Safari again.

Did you try any of the things that I suggested .. closing the apps, restart, try again?

Read this thread about email issues. Maybe you have a "funky" or troublesome email causing the problem.

Not sure about the BBC iPlayer app. Does this app retain data on the iPad? If so, corrupt data could be the issue. Sometimes if you delete an app and reinstall it, and that can help. If you delete the app, restart the iPad and then install again. If the app does contain data, usually you would want to backup the iPad before you delete the app to save the data - but that is a catch 22 because if the corrupt data causes the problem you don't want to restore it to the iPad anyway.

So does anyone have an answer. My ipad is sitll doing it in all apps. Don't have junk mail. It happened long before I set up a mail account on it anyway. I can reset it till the cows come home and it starts to do it again soon. My laptop and iphone don't do it.

There has to be a techy with Apple that knows what's going on or a computer nerd out there somewhere, other than my brother... 🙂
