importing to 9.1.3 from camera

I've used iphoto 11 9.1.3 (607) on my imac and IPM for several years with no great problems until about 10 days ago, I can't remember if there was an update? Since then I can't import I just get the rainbow wheel after the spokes for a few minutes when I mount my camera and have to force quit. I can get back to the iphoto library ok by removing the .plist files & caches and restarting. I have similar problems using image capture which can read he camera memory partly (no file sizes shown) and can't import (at least this does not hang the program) to either iphoto or the desktop... I have tried creating a new library using IPM (3.6.7) and no joy.

I was thinking I have a corrupted camera memory card as I can still import from iphone4 and ipad2...but I've just successfully imported the pictures from the camera onto my macbook which is running iphoto08 and IPM 3.5.8 so now I'm thinking there is something ?thumbnails or similar on my imac that is locking things up or there is a bug in this combination of programs..

PS both machines running 10.6.8... maybe I just need to downgrade back to earlier versions of iphoto if I can find the relevant disks from when I converted from Tiger through to snow leopard plus a boost in RAM. Sorry its a bit involved but people seem to like more info on the software versions

An update sort of .. I was away on holiday so bought a second new 8GB SD card to store photos so I did not have to download any whilst away. On returning with several GB of photo and video and updating to 9.1.5 I was having more problems similar to before... starting to get frustrated. Eventually I managed to move all data to iphoto by copy & paste to desktop and importing in Finder. If I even had camera or a $40 card reader mounted the whole thing went rainbow wheel on me and I had to trash .plist and cache+ restart to get back to square 1.

Anyway have (re) formatted new SD card on camera and now perfect as is the original 4GB card which I had not used while away! Learning point I suggest formatting new SD cards on your specific device if you want them to intefrface with 9.1.5 or 9.1.3....maybe reformatting SD card periodicaly? Bizarely in all of this my macbook running the older iphoto 08 (7.1.5) has happily downloaded photos from both SD cards all the way through with no trouble if a little slowly.... who says upgrades are better. Oh lastly downloading from the card reader is much faster than from the camera so I guess that is also a partial win.

Just wanted to thank you for posting this topic, and to Terence for suggestion a solution.

I have had a problem for the past week or so with iPhoto 9.1.5 hanging (see here https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3246270) and having tried various proposed fixes I eventually realised that it only happened when I tried to upload photos from my SD card. Having found this discussion I tried using a different SD card and had no problems, then reformatted my original card, and although iPhoto did subsequently crash a couple of times for other reasons, all now seems to be working fine.

So thanks!
