Removing files from startup disk?

When trying to get the latest updates I receive the following "You need 3.85 GB of available space to download and install the updates. To increase available space, remove files from your startup disk, and then try again." Where is my "startup disk" and how do I remove files from it?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.7)

Your startup disk is your internal hard drive you are using when using your machine. In order for the OS to operate properly, you need a minimum of 10 - 15% of available space free at all times. So, click on your Macintosh HD (that is your hard drive) and hit Command + I. In the resulting window, post the total capacity, used, and free please.

The best way is to move your movies, pics, music, etc (all space hogging files) to an external drive. After you copy them over, delete them on your hard drive. Also, have you emptied the trash lately? Do that now please.
