Faulty Lock Screen

This is a really annoying fault, which seems to be coming more and more frequent.

From Settings -> Exposé & Spaces -> Corner -> Put Display to Sleep

I go to that corner and the computer locks, when i move the mouse, a black screen with the "unlock computer" box comes up. All seems correct.

But sometimes, when I put my display to sleep, and move the mouse, i get the "unlock computer" box, BUT MY WHOLE session is free to use! I can move my mouse and look through all my documents, open new programs.etc like a normal usage. I just cannot use my keyboard!

This is really annoying, as I am always having to relock up to 5 times to make sure my computer is "safe". Knowning that my password is useless as people can just come onto my mac and go onto my mail or... internet.etc

Any ideas?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Start with System Preferences->Security->General->recycle Require password and select immediately and restart. That should do it. Alternatively, disable auto login and log out.

The option was already set to "immediatley" and i don't understand the second bit, sorry.

The second bit is to stop using the lock screen method and logout, requiring a login to use the machine. BTW, I said to change the option, reset it, and restart for the first one.

If you've disabled autologin and log out, there's nothing else to do. No one can get into your account without a proper username & password.

That's why I'm confused. Because people can.

The log-into-computer box comes up, but instead of a black screen, is shows my desktop, and it's completely active. People can open programs and surf the web.etc even though the computer is "locked"

AFAIK, you haven't logged out or have fast user switching enabled. Turn it off and log out. The only thing that can happen, subsequently, IIRC, is you'll get a login screen.

Try verifying/repairing disk permissions in Disk Utility? Don't know if that will help but its worth a try 😉
