I have an Alltel smartphone plan, now on Verizon. Will I have to upgrade/change my plan if I get an iPhone?

Question: Is there anyone here who was an Alltel customer with a smartphone before the Verizon takeover, and were you able to get the iPhone without changing your plan? I've seen people having some issues with facetime, but nothing esle...

I got on the Verison website the other day and chatted with a rep. His advice was to go through the online checkout process and see what it said I had to do to get the iPhone. I did that and it didn't ask me to upgrade my data plan at all. But I'm not sure I trust it.

And I'm afraid if I call Verizon, their lousy phone reps will just say I oh yes, I have to upgrade my plan and fork over the $20 a month or whatever for it to work.

My other concern is this: I know the new iPhone is coming out, so I've been holding out for that. But Verizon is set to roll out their ridiculous tiered data pricing really soon, and I would hat to get stuck with that as my only option. again that would kill my hopes for an iPhone for the foreseeable future.

I've been looking for solid answers to this, and haven't found any yet. I have a good deal going with my Blackberry and my old Alltel smartphone plan, and I don't pay anything extra for data. I'm eligible for an upgrade, and I'm finally looking at picking up an iPhone, but I have no interest if I have to pay +$20 or +$30 for data. I don't care what anybody says, a $100+ wireless bill is just ridiculous, and I'll go without the iPhone before I ever pay that much.

Crossing my fingers that I'll finally be able to get an iPhone...

Fact: Verizon, as does AT&T, requires that ALL iPhones using their network have a separate data plan. Fact: The Verizon unlimited data plan for the iPhone ends 7/7/11, you need to sign up by the 6th.

From Verizon's FAQ's:

Are there minimum service and data pricing requirements when purchasing iPhone 4?

Yes, iPhone customers will need an unlimited data package $29.99 or higher (available for a limited time only).

From what I understand, the new pricing only affects new Verizon customers, or customers getting a smartphone plan for the first time.

"...current smartphone customers who are upgrade-eligible will be allowed to move to another smartphone and retain their plan. But new customers or current customers who do not have a smartphone plan will only be able to buy a "usage-based" plan, Lewis told AppleInsider on Tuesday."

My situation is somewhat unique in that I was a Alltel customer before the Verizon takeover. This is why I'm interested in seeing if there is anyone else here who was an Alltel customer with an Altel data plan who upgraded to the iPhone.

The only official statement from Verizon, regarding this is;

"Existing unlimited plan subscribers will be grandfathered in and thus able to keep their current plans after that date, even after upgrading their devices."

Are you an existing unlimited data plan subscriber? Do you have a separate unlimited data plan(required by Verizon to use an iPhone)?

Thank you for all of your help. I'll wait and see if anyone who's been in this situation chimes in. In my experience so far, those of us that were on Altell before have had unusual things come up with regard to plans, etc.

I'm also waiting for the new iPhone to come out before trying anything. I'm not getting one in the next 2 days anyway, so might as well wait for the next gen and see what happens.

FWIW, I have unlimited data on AT&T but I rarely (never) go over 1GB/month using cellular so the tiered data plans are not bad for the vast majority of people. This may allow you to wait for the next iPhone instead of rushing to buy the iP4. YMMV

That being said, you should be able to sell the iP4 at a pretty good price to help pay for your next iPhone, which will likely cost you full price as you'll still be under your 2 year contract with the iP4, assuming you go that route. In any case, you will have to pay for a data plan for the iPhone.
