Motion 5 users - Motion 4 vs Motion 5 ?

Hello Folks,

This question is for the pros who upgraded from Motion 4 to Motion 5.

1. How does Motion 5 measure up against motion 4 so far? ( I understand some features are missing in Motion 5 )

2. What is good?

3. What is bad?

4. Is ts really worth the upgrade?

Cheers!

It's the worst program ever. Don't even try it. I'm the biggest Apple fan and supporter, but Motion 5 is the worst program. The panels are looked and you can't modify the interface. You cant work on 2 screens. Live fonts are out. The filters are some times at the tool bar above the time line, some times you are able to only select them from the library tab on the left. Workflow is slow and uncomfortable. I never had such a bad experience with any application.

O, and the rendering options are ridiculous... I was trying to export an SD movie 16 times, with any possible set up, and the end result was every time one - 655 x 486. I end up importing the exported from Motion 5 file into After Effects and rerendar it from there... Baaaddd, bad, bad.

To be completely hones no 😝, I haven't. But the point I'm trying to make is, that I never had to do it with 4. And again, this isn't the only problem... Apple is my favorite company, and it takes a lot for me to complain about an apple product... in fact, I never complain about any product... Thats how bad it is. This is the first (and hope last) time. I think apple should definitely fix the product.

I'm happy that I may be one of a small group of ppl who are unhappy with 5 (which after speaking to other motion users, I know for a fact that I'm not...). And it's very nice that ur enjoying the app, may be It's the wrong program for me... And I apologize, but the 1 week experience I have with it was the worst. Unfortunately I don't know how to explain my particular situation with the filters... 😕 The tab above the time line I just can't click on it... When I click it does nothing. It doesn't give you the option to screw down and choose a filter
 🙂

Sometimes I'm able to use the filters from here:User uploaded file

which is one of the ways. In this perticular situation I can't...

I have to go into the library tab and apply from there:User uploaded file

So far the best 5 feature I have used is rigging and publishing. If you are using FCPX, then Motion 5 is a no-brainer must have.

If you have no need for FCPX, then you may not want to disrupt your workflow yet by switching.

But just keeping current (and having a prettier interface to look at) for $50 seems like a good enough reason to upgrade. There are probably other reasons, but I have not run across them yet.

What Tracy E said.

Motion 5 appears to be slower than Mo4. If you don't have FCX, there is little reason to upgrade as you won't be able to "round trip" as you can with FCP and Mo4. Also Motion 5 can only open 1 project at a time, you don't get Finder "Quickview", you can't open the Motion projects in Quicktime, certain plugins (that I found useful) are no longer available, you don't have support for external monitoring or digital cinema desktop, and you can't break your user interface up and spread it across multiple monitors.

That said, if you have FCX, then you really should have Motion 5 as it is the effects interface for FCX.

Finally, it really isn't an "upgrade" per se... if you purchase Motion 5, you still have access to Motion 4. However, unless you have Motion 4 already running, FCP's "Send to Motion..." will incorrectly invoke Motion 5.

Hope that's the info you're looking for.

Just a note on this one regarding sending to Motion from FCP7

I have Motion 4 & 5 installed and when I "send to Motion" "I" get the clip opening up in Motion 4 every time which seems to be contrary to what others are experiencing here. I have not had Motion 4 running when I send to - on the contrary the last session I did was in Motion 5 this morning. I have setup M4 & M5 as per the Apple recommendations.

Just my 2 pennies worth.

As far as the keyer? Or overall? I've used AE CS5 minimally, mostly because once I started using Motion, I never looked back. The main reason I switched to Motion was for the generators and behaviors. My brain works way better that way than with keyframing. I've never been a fan of keying in AE either. I've always used Shake or dealt with Motion 3 and 4's crummy keyer 🙂.
