If the Apple TV is a second-generation (black) unit, not the first-generation (white) Apple TV which does not support AirPlay.

Today salesman at BestBuy (Apple specialist) told me only iPad II will work with Apple TV, so he would not sell me Apple TV for my original iPad.
The salesman at Best Buy was wrong or confused, as they unfortunately often are. Airplay is supported on the first-generation iPad. Again, see the information to which Eric linked:

It is the first-generation Apple TV that doesn't support Airplay, so the "specialist" apparently had his information backwards.
