Your recent purchase with your Apple ID.

Hi,

Whenever I update my apps or purchase a new app using the iTunes desktop client, I am sent a form e-mail automatically. The subject is always, "Your recent purchase with your Apple ID." and the email reads:

Dear SlamSlam,

Your Apple ID, my@email.com, was just used to purchase "App Name" from the App Store on a computer or device that had not previously been associated with that Apple ID.

If you made this purchase, you can disregard this email. This email was sent as a safeguard designed to protect you against unauthorized purchases.

If you did not make this purchase, we recommend that you go to iforgot.apple.comto change your password, then see Apple ID: Tips for protecting the security of your account for further assistance.

Regards,

At first this alarmed me and I quickly changed my password thinking my account was compromised. But I soon realized this email is dispatched whenever I update apps via the iTunes desktop program. It does not happen on either my iPhone 4 or my iPad 1.

I checked and made sure my PC was an authorized device, yet I still receive these messages.

Any ideas?

I emailed Apple support but they reply with robotic, canned responses that are not even in regards to the subject I'm asking (they are misinterpretting my question for the standard iTunes receipts that are mailed, which this is not.)

Thanks,

Have you changed your phone number, billing address or credit card recently?

That's the *only* thing I can think of as to why I am suddenly promopted for my 3 pin security code. A couple of months ago I updated the phone number attached to my iTunes account. That's relatively the same time I began to be prompted for the 3 digit security confirmation. What is annoying about this, however, is this is the same number on file with the credit card company.

But as I said, that was a few months ago. These new emails started a few weeks ago. But I'm curious if there is a connection?

I don't think the new e-mails are related to a change in phone number, billing address, or credit card. I haven't changed any of those in my account. I can't say whether such a change is kicking off the request for the 3 digit security code, however (because I don't have a credit card attached to my account).

I was just going through my purchase history and seemed to make a discovery, however. It seems like the first item listed (and perhaps downloaded) in an order is the one I received an e-mail about. So, for example, if I downloaded 3 app updates on a particular day, the first app listed is the one that I received an e-mail about.

Will you look at your purchase history and see if this is also the case for you?

I also am using version 10.3.1.55 of iTunes.

If I recall correctly, I received the first e-mail on June 26 or 27, so mine have also been occurring within the past 2 weeks.

I have never been asked to enter 3 security digits when making a purchase or updating an app. The only prompt I have ever received is simply to enter my account password to ensure that I am logged in before the purchase or update takes place. I am guessing the 3 security digits are the ones tied to the credit card you have saved to your account. I do not have a credit card saved to my account. Instead, I just buy iTunes gift cards and redeem those so that my account maintains a balance. I figure that's a lot safer than getting my credit card information stolen in the off-chance that I get hacked.

Same problem for me. Just started in the past two or three weeks. Only happens when I update through my desktop. Updates through my ipad and iphone do not generate these emails.

I'm also prompted to enter my credit card's security code even when downloading free app updates. Then, a $1.00 hold is put on my card.

I've been using an iphone for three years, itunes for years and years and I've never had these problems before.

This is getty really annoying.

I have also been seeing these emails every once in a while. I can't pinpoint it to whether it's for apps I've updated from iTunes or from my iPhone. It's been at least since 6/24 and it's random - I've updated a few dozen apps since then but only seen about 5 emails.

As for the credit card three digit thing, I noticed that started happening to me when I logged in from a different computer and bought something from its iTunes under my main account. When i returned to my main computer it always asked me for my 3 digit CC code.

However it hasn't asked me in a very long time. I don't know why it stopped.

Something new happened tonight regarding the 3 digit credit card security code: For the first time ever, I was prompted to enter it while buying a brand new app directly on my iPhone. That has never happened before.

This is becoming discouraging: I feel like my entire account is completely haywire. And for all I know, it could potentially be in the middle of an exploit by a 3rd party.

Apple's email support has been horrible. They have sent me canned responses to issues that do not even pertain to my question, as if they didn't even read the email. When I asked to speak to a manager or superior regarding the issue, my email was never responded to.

I've been having both of these problems. The 3 digit security code problem has been going on so long for me, that I just finally gave up and removed my credit card from my iTunes account; and I've also been getting the recent purchases email for a couple of weeks or so now.

Apple support never did anything useful for me regarding the security code issue either - I'm not even going to waste my time trying to get any help on this new issue. I can only hope that when enough people start to publicly complain they take notice and address the problem.
