songs paid for are missing
I paid for an album and downloaded it, recently I updated and lost half of the music. How do I get it back without paying for it again?

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer. Use your backup copy to get the music back.
You can also transfer itunes purchases from an ipod: Fie>Transfer Purchases
If you are in the U.S. you can use the newly released Beta version of icloud - Open itunes, go to the itunes store, look under Quick Links, click Purchased
