I just resolved this same issue on my MBP. I called applecare to ask for help, and they ran me through the usual trouble shooting process. I did two things, not sure which one made the disk work again.

1. Before calling apple, I updated the software and rebooted.

2. Then I spoke to an applecare technician over the phone who told me to run a system check by shutting down and then holding the 'd' key whilst booting up until you see a little icon that looks like a desktop computer.

Then when a little window pops up hit the test button. This tested my computer and said that there was nothing wrong (be patient as it takes about 5 minutes). So then I clicked the 'shut down' button and turned it back on normally. She then said to me "It must be a hardware issue" and booked an appointment at the apple store. Then when I hung up the phone I tried inserting a disk and IT WORKED!

So one of those two things must have done something to fix the issue.

That's my 2 cents worth. Hope it helps someone 🙂

1. Go into Spotlight from the top of your MacBook on the menue bar.

2. And search for "CDs & DVDs" (It's also in the System Preferences)

Click on it and a small CDs & DVDs window will pop up with options of what happens when you insert a disk into the drive

3. By then, try inserting a disk in (while that window is open. This kinda wakes up your drive to accept the disk). It should accept it.

4. If nothing happens, then manually open the program that should be opening when you insert the disk or go to Finder (Eg. if it's an audio disk, then open iTunes)

5. If opening the program still does not activate the drive to start spinning the disk, then close the programs and windows you opened, and repeat step 1-4 and the disk should be spinning and automatically opening the proper program.

Hope that helps!
