screen has black shadows after upgrade to 10.6.8

Model Name: MacBook Pro

Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo

I just upgraded this machine to 10.6.8.

After booting up I have a whole bunch of black shadows running from the bottom up. not just one pixel wide! But one inch wide and getting smaller as they go up.

A reboot in safe boot makes them go away. Boot in my normal account and they are back.

Anybody any idea?

MBP, MM, MBP - 10.6 + Windooz XP on a hard partition

If your Mac functions correctly in Safe Mode go to System Preferences >> Accounts >>Login Items, and remove them. Boot normally and test. If not go to/Users/yourname/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Lastly, try moving/Users/yourname/Library/Fonts to your desktop and restarting.

Log out/in or restart, if that sorts it start putting items back one at a time until you find the culprit.

That's odd. Read the other items Safe Mode disables and check those.

They're here under"Some Features Don't Work in Safe Mode"

A video problem that is present in normal mode but not in Safe Mode does not rule out a hardware problem. Safe mode disables advanced graphics features such as Quartz Extreme, and so a problem in a video hardware component that is only used for such features might not be apparent.

Looks like starting in safe mode does effect this issue. Based on the info form jsd2' post.

Off to the store next week. They will need to test the MBP and see if it is indeed funked. Strange thing is that under the extended warrantee, I got a new motherboard about 8 weeks ago, as the computer kept frying my batteries. I would have expected that the replacement boards would not ship with the faulty graphics cards.

I have the same issue on my early 2008 Macbook Pro, only visible after 10.6.8 upgrade. The quick reset seems to solve it at the moment. (CTRL-SHFT-EJECT).

Have you seen the link above?

If this is your issue I suggest you phone Apple to get it fixed as there is a extended warrantee on that. In your local store they will test it and tell you n the spot if yours is effected.

All is well. Apple covered it as mentioned in the article. Got a new Motherboard (graphic card is integrated in it), this did not do it and they changed the display. now all is well.
