/ 9 6 3 keys not working now

An odd thing happened with my iMac aluminum keyboard (two months after my 3 year Applecare warranty expired, of course). A row of keys on the far right numberpad no longer respond. Specifically, they are the forward slash (/) nine, six and three keys (9, 6, 3). The numbers on the regular QWERTY keyboard section still work (which is how I am able to type them into this post), as well as every other key on the keyboard, including the other numbers and punction on the number keypad, but just not these four keys for some reason!.

The odd part is that my wife's Macbook also developed a key problem on the same day. She can no longer type a capital "I" or use many of her other keys.

One thing occurred to me to explain this improbable hardware failure to both computers at once, and that was the fact that I had bought an inexpensive Bluetooth wireless keyboard that works with Macs and had paired it with my iMac that same day to see if it would work. It did, but I did not want to use it with my iMac, so I took it up to the media room (where my wife works with her Macbook) and paired it up with the PS3 to use with that device instead.

I never paired it up with the Macbook, and the media room is on a different floor and other part of the house from my iMac in my basement office. So, I don't know if any extraneous Bluetooth signals are somehow causing this behavior, but it doesn't seem likely. However, that is the only possibility that I can even come up with to explain the sudden keyboard oddness on two different computers.

Any suggestions or similar experiences are welcome. Thanks.

Try doing a SMC reset, here are instructions for the iMac for the MacBook they would be different!

SMC RESET

  • Shut down the computer.
  • Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
  • Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
  • Release the power button.
  • Attach the computers power cable.
  • Press the power button to turn on the computer.

PRAM RESET

  • Shut down the computer.
  • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
  • Turn on the computer.
  • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
  • Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
  • Release the keys.

If the computer worked OK with the G4 keyboard that points the finger at a faulty keyboard. If they machine is still under warranty or covered by AppleCare then contact Apple to arrange getting a new keyboard.

As I mentioned doing a reset on a MacBook is totally different. Here are instructions for doing so on an Apple Notebook:

MacBook Pro

SMC & PRAM Resets

SMC RESET

  • Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
  • On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
  • Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
  • Press the power button to turn on the computer.

PRAM RESET

  • Shut down the computer.
  • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step
  • Turn on the computer.
  • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
  • Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
  • Release the keys.

I checked them out, but they only seemed to have used keyboards marked down, depending on their level of usedness (A, B and C quality) but the lowest price was still around $40 before shipping, so I may as well pay $49 for a brand new one on Amazon with free shipping.

Just to update, NOW the question mark-forward slash key has inexplicably stopped working!
