can you get emoji on the macbook pro?

I can see the emoji menu well enough, but when trying to insert one on my text messages the cursor disappears from the text box..........weird indeed; not happening with my emails....msut be some easy fix???

and a box should appear and if you scroll to the bottom there will be an emoji option, and its just like the emoji app on an iphone!
