my ipad doesn't work with earphones in?

Are you sure you are pushing the earphones in all the way. You have to really push on the jack firmly to make the connection work. It takes a little getting used to but it does take a firm push.

"Different ones" - are you using anoither brand of earphones? There are no guarantees they'll work. With my iPad1 I had to really forcefully push the plug in until it 'clicked' for it to work.

Assuming the machine is still under warranty do you have an Apple Store nearby to take it in so they can take a look at it?

If all of your sounds work without earphones - in other words, if you can play music, get email notifications, can hear keyboard clicks and so on - through the iPad speaker - but you get no sound at all with earphones - you may have a faulty device that needs to be replaced.

If all of the earphones that you have tried have their own volume controls - make sure that you have the sound turned up in them as well. I assume that you have tried several sets of the standard iPod/iPhone/iPad earbuds.

But just for the heck of it, try resetting your iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple logo appears - ignore the reds slider - let go of the buttons. After the iPad fully boots, try the earphones again.

Also remember that the iPad's volume control lever/switch also controls the earphone volume separately.

HI I'm having the same problem + the lateral switch isn't working either. I made shure to push the earphones all the way in, tried diferent sets, and booted the device holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple logo appeared . It didn't work for me...

Can you contact Apple Support and maybe get it into them for service? It is possible that the jack is faulty.

I had the same problem too. I did a soft reset and it worked again.
