Q: will apple's usb modem work with Lion

I don't care so much about whether it will work for faxing. Well, I care a little. But mostly, I use the usb modem for communicating with a bulletin board. You probably think this must be so old-fashioned that why should Apple care. Well, I'm talking about the U.S. government. I submit claims to Medicare, Medicare requires electronic transmission, and the only way you can submit without paying a third party is through a bulletin board accessible only via a data modem. Is Apple saying that health care isn't that important? Just kidding, but what's the answer: Will the Apple USB modem work with Apple's own system?

As a work-around to faxing word documents, print the select save as pdf, the fax from Preview or Acrobat. Bummer, I know.

    Hey Jeff,

Did you try to see if the Drivers on that 3'' CD that came with your Zoom modem would work with the discontinued Apple USB modem ?

I have a 27'' iMac w/Lion ... but had to go to my wife's Macbook late 2008 model on Snow Leopard to be able to fax a document to the Government. Snanned & email was not acceptable to them (legal reasons).

If you need someone to try your drivers, just email them to me and I'll try them and report back here.

Firstly I would like to commend Zoom UK's technical assistance. Absolutely first class. Gave me some additional suggestions on installing the Zoom but I had got round the problem anyway by setting it up temporarily as a dial up modem, which seems to have cleared a dial out path for the modem and now faxing works OK. They also advised me that MS has changed the way faxing works on Word 2011 to be different from all other Mac programs (why????????)

On Word 2011, you can fax out direct but it works differently from previous versions of Word, where you used the fax PDF on the PDF pull down menu at the bottom of the print dialog box.

You now Cmd-p or click on print in the file menu (not on the print icon as that defaults to last used printer) as normal but then select the USB-Modem as the print device. You then have to check which pages to print in the Copies and Pages sub menu in the third pull down menu from the top on the print dialog box and check that the number of copies are one (you can save this as a fax preset so you don't have to check this in future).  You then go back to Fax Information on the third pull down menu and fill in the number you want to fax to, finally clicking on Print.

    Marc,

You cannot fax any longer with the Fax PDF method from Word 2011. You just get an error message

"Invalid Copies – The number is out of range".  MS playing silly B's again!

See my post above for new way to fax direct from Word 2011.

I purchased the $11 modem from ebay.  I set up the modem and was able to fax successfully using MS Word and Excel 2008 (which runs fine for me on Lion).

At my office, I have been using PageSender for my faxes, but that crashes on launch with 10.7 (shame on them for not supporting 10.7).  So, I don't know how I would be receiving faxes.  I haven't tested that yet.

Mine was the generic from eBay, not the Zoom; but yeah, actually, I thought about that, and if I were more knowledgable about those things, it might've been worth a shot. I know just enough about Unix to be dangerous, and it seems to me that modifying a Linux driver to work with OS X's foundation (BSD-based, I believe) ought to be fairly straightforward. But it was OK with existing drivers, and, y'know, $13, I mean, really, how hard do I want to work?

BTW, 10.7.1 came out today, and no, there's no apparent support for the USB modem...

graphico, you have my sympathy for the extent of your hassle. Sounds dreadful, as Marvin the Robot might say...

So of course as soon as I get the refund the modem shows up. I set it up as above and it appears to be faxing. I could never get online with my 27 inch iMac and do not need to. I faxed my doctor to see if it works and if they received it, I'm good to go. It seems three times faster at faxing than my Apple Modem. Might be a blessing in disguise.

If I receive confirmation that it does indeed fax, I will refund my refund.

    That is all.

I brokee down and got the Zoom today.  Model 3095 56K Dial-up USB.  My Mac recognized it immediately and I added it as a fax in the preferences.  Trouble is that even with the sound checked, I can no longer hear dialing or connection sounds.  Anyone else note his.  Guess that I should just be happy that it is working again.  Thanks for all of the suggestions in this posting.  The  CD is useless as it is for PC's only.

Because healthcare EMR's are so different throughout the nation, faxing records still has an extremely important role in communicating patient vital information to providers.

I am not getting any dial out or connection tone either. I am am having to listen in by turning on the speaker on the parallel regular telephone. I will query this with Zoom UK, whose back up service is absolutely first class.
