I have a late 2008/2009 macbook pro and I have connected an external monitor using the mini display port with an HDMI convertor as the monitor has this port too. My question is: Does this Macbook support audio as the monitor has audio out for speakers but I only get sound from the Macbook Pro.

No it doesn't support audio through HDMI. You do have a an optical audio port on your macbook pro though you just need to get an adapter...
I thought so.
The optical audio port is the 3.5 mm jack that does both audio in and out, correct?

One is an input (line-in/mic) , the other is an output (external speakers/headphones)
