What are the properties of the source clip you are asking FCP to match to?

Click on a source clip in the browser, and type Command + 9 to see the properties for the clip.

Report those or post a screen shot.

The H.264 codec is extremely difficult for FCP to edit in. FCP7 considers H.264 an aquisition and delivery format, not an editing one.

Download the free software MPEG Streamclip from:

http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html

and convert you source footage to the ProRes LT codec.

Import that converted file into FCP7 and see if that works better for you.

In MPEG Streamclip, after you Open the file you want to transcode, go to the menu File > Export to Quicktime, and on the pane that opens, choose Apple ProRes LT from the drop down menu for Compressor.

Convert the file, then import it to FCP - create a new sequence, then edit your transcoded clip to it, and let FCP match the settings.

If you still have trouble, post back.
