Quicktime and mono files...

Why can't QuickTime play mono files? From the Finder or as an open file.

And how do I go about getting QuickTime to play mono files? Perhaps some setting has been altered that I'm not aware of.

Odd. I can't play any, aiff or mps. Haven't tried wav.

We get dual mono files at work for stuff and the only way I can get those to play is by opening them in QT pro and assigning them out a single channel. Otherwise only one side plays.

Here at the house, the files won't play with any sort of channel configuration. I used on board sound and my Revolution 7.1 card. Neither works.

I need to open them in Garage Band or some other editor and export them as a stereo file. That's what's odd. Garage Band will play them, but I'm sure it uses QT as it's audio engine. Maybe not.

Anyway, they won't play in iMovie. That's what got me started trying to figure out why I didn't have any sound from this mono sfx I was using. I then started checking the file in the Finder and it wouldn't play. Then I opened it in QT and you can see the meters moving, but no sound from the speakers. That's when I tried other speaker configs but to no avail.

same here, and its driving me crazy.
this is major and started with tiger.

i reinstalled everything 'cause i thought this to be a messup. but it appears, that quicktime can't route mono files of any kind correctly.

looking at the inspector for the movie (sound) with apple-j i find "mono" in the routing of the audio tab.

i tested mp3, wav and aiff. all the same.

to reproduce: convert anything to anything mono using itunes an try to play the file back using quicktime (routed to motu 2408) the sound will come out of analog output #3.

anyone got an idea how to get quicktime to route mono files to the main out again ?

thanks kirk for the answer.

however, i tried to work it with the audio-midi-setup without luck.

making professional audio with the mac for over 10 years ... and some years on os x ... i still don't understand the audio part of that utillity and the "?" buttons are also leading to blank help pages. thas is one badly designed software.

maby you can give me a hint ?
the "configure speakers" button (if thats the english label, i am on a german system) opens a window where i stop understanding anything...

i could not find any manuals online of that utility...
but again, i didn't need it all these years up to tiger. 😟

any hint is welcome on how to make quicktime play "mono" asigned audio.

cheers,
ab.

Go to "system preferences", then "quicktime". click the "browser" tab then uncheck "save movies in disk cache" check box.

Wierd bug. I looked a long time before finding this hint. not sure why apple doesn't give this info out in Support.

I previously posted a fix that didn't work out but if someone is still trying to figure this out I made a discovery today. My mail app would no longer play my voice mail wave files from inside the actual emails. When I played through the internal speaker i heard it fine but through my sound card nothing. I had noticed that the files were mono and if I opened them in quicktime and reassigned the mono channel to right or left I could hear it but I didn't know how to change the way quicktime would rout mono files by default. Today I had some time to kill so I experimented. I found that on my system with my sound card the solution was to go to the speaker configuration setting in the audio devices panel of the audio midi setup window. There I went to the multi channel setting and switched it from 5.1 surround to stereo. Perfect sound from my mono file now on both speakers for the first time. I had to close and restart my apps to be sure these settings had worked. A little more work showed that the mono sound was previously being routed to the center channel which was not connected on my system. It appears to have resolved my issue but why the importance of these setting was never mentioned by apple is beyond me. If this works for anyone else let me know.

Hey Thanks! I'll give this one a shot when I get to work.

I bought a new speaker system for the house. It's the Logitech Z5500 and I'm connected digitally through the optical cable. Mono files seem to work now, but it could be because it's a 5.1 system. Or because it's digital. I don't know. But the system at work still doesn't play them properly and I'll check the speaker config.

Thanks!

Mike
