Q: Installing used copy of Final Cut Studio 2

Hello,

I've been reading around the net and haven't been able to find a very clear answer as to what happens when you buy and install a used copy of Final Cut Studio. I understand that the program can be sold as soon as it is completely uninstalled from the seller's machine, but it's what happens after that on the buyer's machine that I am dealing with.

It is important to note that I am dealing with full versions of the program, not upgrades (nor do I have to option to consider them in my situation).

These are my questions;

1. When the buyer (me) installs the seller's used copy of Final Cut Studio 2 will I be able to install the program on both a desktop & laptop like when the suite is new (this is vital because I am getting a new laptop and need studio on both machines)?

2. If (for some unknown reason) the seller's used copy of FCS2 doesn't install, can I install FCS HD without any problems?

3. If for some reason FCS2 isn't completely uninstalled from the seller's machine will it impede my installation process of FCS2?

Any info you can give me in regard to any of these questions would be greatly appreciated. It is a bit time sensitive (not that I have a deadline but I need to do this asap) so immediate responses would be amazing.

Thanks,

~ JoeA

    1. Yes.

    2. Why would you think FCS 2 wouldn't install?   Also note that FCP 4 was written for PPC processor Macs and will not run properly on Intel processor Macs (and that's IF you can get it to install).  FCP 4 works best with OS 10.3.9 and QuickTime 6.5.2.

    3. No.

Another note: To make the sale perfectly legal, the previous owner must include ALL install discs and ALL the accompanying documentation. Here's a link to the Software License Agreement for FCS 2: http://images.apple.com/legal/sla/docs/finalcutstudio2.pdf

Thank you for your quick response David!

    1. Great! Glad that worked out.

    2. When I say FCS 2 I mean the suite that came with Final Cut Pro 6, DVD Studio Pro 4, Motion 3, LiveType 2, Soundtrack Pro 2, Color, Compressor 3. I'm pretty sure it will play nicely with a new intel machine.

When I say FCS HD I mean the suite that came with Final Cut Pro (5.1.4), DVD Studio Pro, Motion 2, and Soundtrack Pro, and Compressor 2. This version (5.1) was made to work with intel machines.

    3. Thank you also for providing the link! I definitely want to make sure this is legal.

    Much appreciated

Just fror clarification (since Apple has used different names at different times), FCP HD was version 4.5 and was the only version of FCP that included "HD" in the offical name.  And the suite of apps that accompanied FCP 5.1 (aka the "crossover" or "universal" version since it worked on PPC and Intel Macs) was just called "Final Cut Studio," later becoming known as Final Cut Studio 1.  Prior to Final Cut Studio, with version 5.0, Apple released the "Production Suite" which was the first time the apps were bundled together.

So to reiterate my second question. If the FCS 2 installation doesn't work out, can I reinstall my copy of FCS 1 without any problems?

As long as your system meets the requirements, it shouldn't be a problem to reinstall the earlier version.

You may want to consider doing a clean install; backup or clone your boot drive, then reformat it.  IUnstall the OS, followed by the applications.  Doing it that way does take some time, but it helps ensure a clean running system.
