My iPhone 3 speaker is not working

my phone still has full functionality but when i go to make a call or receive a call...I can't not hear anything when I hold the phone to my ear (yes the volume is turned up)...I can only hear a call by using my speaker phone...any ideas why I can't hear anything when using the speaker at top of my phone?
