It is certainly not a replacement for a computer at all.
It works as an extension of your computer.
I would never consider it as a replacement for an actual computer of any kind.
Hmmm. My main uses for it would be word processing, internet connection.
The word processing is very light compared to what you will likely need for college courses - no footnotes, for instance. The iPad is a great complement to a full computer, would be fantastic to carry around campus, but odds are you will need a full computer to rely on.

I would think that the ipad would be a big mistake as a replacement for a computer.
I want purchase an ipad to take to class as well. Mac laptop took a beating over the summer, not to mention being heavy. My question, will the ipad allow me to create docs (papers), take notes, edit and provide the general functions of a laptop until I get home and sync it? if so, what apps are the best for the money?
Thanks
Yes, perfect for that. There are many apps you could look at - I recommend Evernote (cloud based notebook app) and, if you want hand-written notes with a stylus, WritePad.
