Green Screen instead of video...

CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2600+ (Barton)
Mobo: Jetway ADBL400 VIA chipset based
G/C: NVidia GeForce FX5700 128mb (driver version 81.95)
S/C: Creative Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 digital (OEM)
RAM: 512mb TwinMos PC3200

OS: Windows Xp Pro (SP1)

ok my problem:

When trying to play .Mov quicktime videos in quicktime then video area will go all green sometimes... and sometimes it will play videos with a problem.
what can i do to prevent this happening?

i've included PC specs incase there is a problem with my hardware setup. (ie. bugs with NVidia cards etc)

Regards,

Philip Ian Adam Smith

EDIT: forgot to add my quicktime version is 7 std, but this problem happened since version 5 - and uninstalling and installing fresh didn't work neither did just re-installing
and before anyone saying its because of the overclocking - it happened before i over clocked as well.

Just as i thought... i'd have to answer my own problem... and i have!

"iTunes & Quicktime problems on nVidia cards

Hopefully people will find this.

Are you getting a green playback screen and your computer slowing down to a crawl when watching Quicktime movies or movies downloaded using iTunes 5 or 6?

If you own a nVidia card what you need to do is disable DirectDraw Acceleration.

Here is how you do it.

Open QuickTime player
Edit>Preferences>QuickTime Preferences
Then go to the “Advanced” Tab

Under the Video section, un-check the box that is marked “Enable DirectDraw Acceleration”
This will allow video to play without getting the dreaded green screen but scaling the movies will look like poop. I’d like to know who is responsible for this issue nVidia or Apple?

I’ve tried 3 versions of nVidia drivers with no success.
The ForceWare drivers I tried were 66.93, 77.72, and 78.01 which is current as of this writing

If you have to, use the DirectDraw “Safe Mode” but be warned that some things in iTunes will stop functioning like they used to, such as Album art in the “Get Info” for a file.

For the record I have a eVGA GeForce FX5500 256mb AGP/8X card

UPDATE: While searching for some drivers for an old card I ran across the nVidia driver archive, it doesn’t have everything but you can give it a shot with one of the older drivers like suggested in the comments. I haven’t been able to test out using older drivers as I’ve have some luck in using the newest drivers (81.98) and playing QuickTime movies with DirectDrat accelleration on. "

can a Mod or Admin sticky this? or add it to your solutions as this actually works!

Okay. I, too, am getting a green screen in quicktime. I have tried uninstalling xVid and DivX codecs, reinstalling different codecs, uninstalling and reinstalling Quicktime, I even updated to the latest version of direct X. I have changed my display drivers. And to note, I am using a Gforce 256meg FX5200 card.

I have gone into quicktime settings and disabled direct draw, tried safe mode, tried afjusting my "streaming speed" and still nothing seems to work. All of this started when I upgraded to version 7.x. I did the one with iTUnes, and then uninstalled that and did the stand alone version, still nothing.

More details about my system

I am running an AMD Sempron 1.2GHz
1 meg of ram
directX 9.0c
Running Windows 2000
any my nVidia driver is the latest (84.21)

I have searched and searched and it seems the majority of people encountered this problem after switching to Quicktime 7.x. And it seems in the mojarity of these cases, A Quicktime/Apple rep says "It's not our program, it's something on your end"

You would think after so many cases like this popping up, that it would be "on their end," especially since, like I said, the majority of the posts about this issue says it happened after they upgraded quicktime versions.

In any case, I continue to try to search for an answer that works for me, because "Safe Mode" and disabling direct draw does not fix this problem for me

Earlier this month I had the problem with the green screen, I tried to play a movie with divx player, that required the H264 codec. I dont have the latest version of QT because I recieve no audio when using it. I recieved an error message about the H264 codec.

My solution:

I downloaded the Storm Codec pack, and installed the codecs i was missing (mainly the H264), it also came with the best Media Player => Media Player Classic 😉 as a bonus. I have been able to watch everything since then

I donno if this would fix your problem or not, but give it a try if you like, here is a link for the storm codec

i have the same problem but with a black screen. i installed itunes with qt7.1 both on my home pc and my office, it works fine in my office, so i guess it is computer dependent.

i downloaded and installed vlc player ( http://www.videolan.org/vlc/) and it solved my problem, however when i try to play a mov online, the browser still uses qt to play and i still get a black screen. so i am still struggling to find a solution for qt.

any more suggestions?
