Because of having several different point-and-shoot cameras that use the same filing naming prefix and also re-setting file numbering in my cameras I have ended up with different photos that have the exact same file names. E.g., Several different photos with the file name "DSCN0115". Is this a problem in iPhoto? I had some problems with thumbnails becoming mixed up in an early version of iPhoto (maybe 06).

iPhoto handles duplicate file names just fine
However when you export to a single folder then duplicated file names are a problem - it can be solved using the file name options of the export command
Once in a great while I have seen small issues with iPhoto importing duplicate file names - not sure exactly why since the structure of the library should eliminate this as an issue - it happened extremely infrequently and may actually be a different problem that looks like duplicate file names are causing it
I would just not worry about it - if you have an export problem remember to use the rename files option in the export command
