Sorry. Using 10.6.8 on MacBook Pro (early 2009 version).

Here's the error message:

Verifying volume “Home Seagate HD”

Verify volume failed: Framework unable to communicate with DiskManagementTool

Verify and Repair volume “Home Seagate HD”

Repairing volume failed: Framework unable to communicate with DiskManagementTool

Thanks for your help.

Now I'm making some progress in limited backups to the external HD.

What software are you using to do those backups?

It still is rejecting certain files in the backup queue.

I don't know what you mean by that.

I think I've installed the 10.6.8 combo update already.

You may be running OS X 10.6.8, but it's extremely doubtful that you've installed the 10.6.8 "combo" update, which you can download from here. That's a (rather large) collection of all the updates since OS X 10.6.0. The "combo" update reapplies all those changes. For reasons that can be somewhat mysterious, doing that can fix some otherwise inexplicable problems. Please try that.
