Is a Time Machine compatible hard drive formatted with Mac OS?

I have a 1 terabyte Buffalo LinkStation Live NAS, and it says that it's Time Machine compatible; does this mean the the drive is formatted with Mac OS Extended (Journaled)? Thanks.

Probably not but the device supports AFP protocols which is necessary for communication with OS X.
