trouble transferring iTunes to an external hard drive

I was able to transfer my iTunes Media file from my old G4 onto an external hard drive. But when I connected the hard drive to my newer MacBook Pro, and tried to connect the music files, it started talking about me not having proper permissions. The support info I found talked about needing to type in Unix codes to open things up, which is scary, because I don't know a thing about Unix.

Help!
