iPhone 4 Interlacing effect

Hey guys,

Just got a new black iPhone 4 16GB the other day along with my girlfriend (She got the White 16GB). After only a few hours of use I started to notice these weird interlacing/scan lines showing up on the phone.

They predominantly show up best on a higher brightness level + dark background, but can be seen almost all the time when you're changing focus from one item on the screen to the next. This post here shows exactly what I'm talking about. Seeing them is quite disappointing in two ways. First, it makes me feel like I'm getting an inferior product than I was expecting, and second, because it's distracting when you're using the phone to see these lines pop up whenever you're looking around the screen.

I've checked my girlfriend's phone, and this issue is non-existant. Her screen is nice and smooth, with clean corners and no sign of any interlacing. I've already called up AppleCare once, and even went to the Apple store and had the phone replaced. The new phone is having the exact same issue, while my girlfriend's remains crystal clear.

I've set up another callback appointment for tomorrow to let them know it's still going on, but I don't want to seem like I just have OCD or something.

Has anyone else had this issue before/resolved it in any way? I'm currently running 4.3.3.

Thanks

I went to the apple store today, here is my small research:

I test out 8 iphone4s,4 white Version and 4 Black. All of them running IOS4.3.x( 2 ios4.3.3, 2 ios4.3.4, 4 ios4.3.5)

1.All of them does NOT have interlacing effect under direct observation.

2.With the test image,3 of them have very weak flickering, almost undetectable, the others do Not flicker at all.

SpezGuy

My phone has exactly the same issue with yours.it usually looks fine in the morning when I wake up ,but flickers again after using for a while.

I began to think it is a hardware failure, there is nothing to do withcolor temperature, fireware vision or baseband, only the screen itself. And if you are using an normal screen for a while, you would not standinterlacing screen which become easierto notice.

I decide to make an appointment with the Genius to try to get another replacement.I will tell you guys the result.

hey,guys

I went to the Genius Bar today and got a replacement. There is definitely No flickering in the apple store with my test image, but after using for an hour,it flickers again....I really did not know what went wrong with the screen. In addition,I found that the iphones forexhibition in the store have weak flickering, but they keep sreens open for all times.with doing this with my phone,it also has very weak flickering. What I mean is that no flickering on the exhibition phone does NOT means they don't have problems.

There is another case. One of my friend's iphone also has this issue only after he update to ios5 beta3 from ios4.3.x,and then ios5 beta4 ,this issue also exists. but when he downgrades to ios4.3.5,this issue is gone.

So,I went back to the starting point,Is it a software issue? The screens from different batches need different refresh rate, maybe very small difference, but apple doesn't take it into account.I hope so and could do noting but to wait for ios5 coming.

BTW,I report this "BUG" to Apple. I think if more and more people report this issue to apple ,apple will take it into account in the near furture.

You can report it herehttps://bugreport.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/RadarWeb.woa/wa/signIn,Sign your ID as a developer (Its FREE)first.

Wish you guys good luck.

Hey Troy,

I too have noticed this issue on 4.3.3, and iOS5 beta 4. Sometimes it will not be present on my phone. It could happen if I've used my phone for 5 minutes, or for 30 minutes..the time doesn't seem to impact when the interlacing shows up.

My dad also got a new iPhone 4 16Gb Black. The problem does NOT appear to be happening on his phone at all. Meanwhile, I'm on my 3rd replacement and the problem is still happening. It's extremely annoying because I feel like I'm using a knockoff phone or something.

The test image you provided clearly shows the flickering, which I think would be our only hope in showing this effect to other people that might not be able to see the lines themselves.

HEY,JAKE

I just get the oppsite case of yours. The interlacing completely disppeared if I've used my phone for a few minutes (keeping the screen on).but after locking the screen for a while then open it ,it flickers again. Both of my two replcement phones are in this case. It's so weird. Maybe it's the IOS thing? The CPU/GPU frequencyor other hardware parameters are different when using or not using phone. It's just my speculate.

What is your father's new iphone4 production batches? You can know it from the serial number. For example,9512805KA2S,means this phone is made in the 28th week of 2011.The third number means year(0 means 2010,1means 2011),and the 4th and 5th number means week of that year. and your father's phone always does not have this problem at any time or any case?I dont get a new iphone4 on my hand.I would be very grateful If you can make a more detailed test with that grey image , I suspect that the replacement phones are unqualified ,lower quality at least. There are at least 10 people report their relacemeant phones have this issue in our local forum.Even that there is a guy get 10 replacement phones, and all of them flicker.

It easy for me to get another relacement, just show the genius this test image, but it's so waste of time.I really do not know what to do now.

Troy,

I checked the serial numbers on my original iPhone box, replacement, girlfriend's iPhone, and dad's iPhone. Here's what I came up with:

Original: Week 123

Replacement: Week 126

Dad's: Week 125

Girlfriend's: Week 125

I have a feeling that it is indeed software related. Maybe something on how the software interacts with the hardware?

Thanks for your replies.

Jake-M,Both of your dad and GF's phone are made in 25th week of 2011,and neither of them have this issue,so maybe the 25th week phones are all perfect 🙂My first repalcement phone is 28th week, and second one is 27th week.

Andresebr's case prove that it's a software issue,at least for his iphone.Back to my starting point, maybe there is something to do with the baseband.Because baseband get an major upgrade from ios4.2(or4.1)to ios4.3,but tiny upgrade from ios 4.3 to ios5beta.this is the caseband version list:

iPhone 4 iOS 4.1 02.10.04

iPhone 4(WCDMA)4.2.1 03.10.01

iPhone 4(WCDMA)4.3&4.3.1-4.3.5 04.10.01

iPhone 4(WCDMA)5.0beta4 04.11.06

iPhone 4(WCDMA)5.0beta5 04.11.07

There is not much difference between ios4.3 and ios5beta from the version number,Actually, the ios5 beta5 did not solve the interlacing effect.

I have report this "BUG" to Apple on 29th july, but they did notrespond to me so far.I will continue to submit more evidence. Hope the Apple engineerstake this matter seriously.

Hey Troy,

I have yet to see this issue appear on anyone else's iPhone 4. I guess the other option is to check the store phones to see what week they were made. While the week 25 phones so far, seem to not be affected by this issue, it's hard to say for sure whether or not that is the resolution.

My friend has updated his iPhone 4 to 5.0b5, GSM version, and is still having the issue. What's odd, is that the problem comes and goes - unrelated to usage time.

Sometimes I can wake up in the morning and the screen is terrible and hard to use, and others it looks perfect without any interlacing whatsoever. The one good thing about this is that it makes me believe that the potential is there for the screen to work properly, but for some reason there's something causing this problem to occur.

If it's not addressed with the official release of iOS5, I'm not sure what the next step will be. I could take it in to the Genius Bar, but I'm worried that the problem would not show up then and there.

I'm having the same issue with my replacement handset. Manufactured on week 32, 2011. The problem is very noticable on gradients and difficult to see on solid white and black. The original handset was replaced for a worn out home button after 1 year. I've had this unit for approximately 10 days before I noticed the problem.

I'm running iOS 4.3.5.

I tried to take a photo of the problem. Unfortunately I don't have a great camera and it picked up some unintentional artifacts. The white specks around the numbers are not the issue and not visible, it's just something the camera picked up. The real problem is the horizontal lines, noticable on the gray gradient and on the Earth.

Your picture shown the true that every replacement phone have the interlace line like that. So how can we deal with Apple? I replace my iPhone twice. Problem still remain, waste a lot of time. So Apple please serious with this problem. We need only new prefect display replacement phone, please please Apple.

Unfortunately everyone, I do not think Apple will be doing much about this. It's not a priority right now because they're probably putting all their resources into the iPhone 5, as well as hopefully GOOD retina displays. They will replace our phones as many times as we ask them to bc their business model is to make us happy. Too bad the problem exists IN the phone and in whatever manufacturing change took place this year. I know that once in a while there are still screens that do not have interlacing but they are not the majaority and no one really knows a rhyme or reason to how to get one. Seems like just luck at this point.
