Why won't iPad 2 recognize the SD card reader?

Just bought iPad2 and the camera connection kit. The Pad will not do anything....nothing...does not recognize the SD card reader when plugged into the slot? Is there a patch/fix for this issue?

Have you got a card in the SD reader ? Also the card needs to have a DCIM directory off its root, with the photos underneath it with filenames of exactly 8 characters (no spaces) plus their fil extension - which should be how they are if a camera put the photos on the card as opposed to you doing it via your computer.

I'm not aware of any fix to it as I'm not aware of there being a problem - but have you got the latest iOS version on your iPad (4.3.3) ?

Mine works fine with the card reader part of the kit with SD cards - the power issue should only affect other card readers being used with the kit, or sometimes with the direct connection to a camera.

The connection on mine was a bit tight to start off with, so I had to make sure it was pushed in properly.

Have you tried a reset to see if it works after the iPad ahs restarted ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

Ignore that post, you do not have to use a powered USB hub with the Camera Connection Kit.

A few other things to try;

1. Remove any case you have on the iPad and try it again.

2. Connect the camera to the other piece you received with the CCK and see if the iPad can read the camera.

3. Connect the SD to your computer and see if it is formatted as described in the post above. Not all cameras write to the SD card in this manner.

I had the same problem. My iPad 2 wouldn't recognize either adapter of my camera connection kit (SD card or USB). I finally discovered that if I pushed firmly on the adaptor (seating it more securely), the iPad would sense it, and the SD card could be read.

However, it required continous pressure to keep it working. The new case design of the iPad 2 apparently comes into contact with the camera connection kit's housing before the connector is completely seated.

After confirming that there wasn't a newer version of the kit that was made for the iPad 2, I decided to modify mine by carefully filling a shallow groove into the connection kit's housing, where the iPad case touches it. I barely needed to remove any of the plastic to make it work reliably.

I used a small needle-file to remove the needed amount of plastic, and protected the metal connector by placing a business card between it and the file while working on it. In other words, be careful, you could easily mess things up. And needless to say, this will probably void the connection kit's warranty.

So, my feeling is that the mechanical tolerances for the connection kit need to be revised by Apple, and until they are it will be hit-or-miss as to whether it will work out of the box.

pjbarros,

Have you tried the solutions suggested in this thread?

First, reset/reboot the iPad. That sometimes cures the problem.

Then go back and re-read my earlier post regarding seating the connector more firmly. This was definitely the problem with mine, and I believe it is the solution for many camera connection kit users, until Apple redesigns the connector.

WOW! Thanks for that tip about the 8-char filename! I was going crazy. One card was readable and it "accidentally" had filenames like "David001.jpg" and these worked. Another card had names "Mark001.jpg" and these would NOT work. Changed to 8-chars and all is fine. Thanks again.
