Formatting Numbers on X and Y Axis

I saw a few threads on the topic but it was convoluted.

Since I've been using iWork... I haven't had to use Numbers that much. But once in a while I need it. I've never really 'got' how to format numbers on the x and y axis of charts, until now.

I think the 1 thing that irks many of us is having huge numbers either on the X or Y axis, or both. They need to be shorthanded for presentation purposes.

So instead of having on the Y axis:

$0, $4,000.000, $8,000.000, $12,000.000

You want:

$0, $4, $8, $12... (thous)

I struggled with the Inspector under Charts>Axis... I had format as Currency and decimals as "0". But my Y axis had long numbers and it wasn't shortening them. I finally entered in min and max values (0 for min, and 12 for max). But not quite done yet.

Now my values in the chart data were wrong because I changed the number of maximum decimals on the Y axis. So I went into the chart data and changed over the values to 2 decimals:

From $1,200 to $1.2, etc...

Now the bar graphs properly show and the Y axis doesn't have massively long numbers. Thus, you just have to reduce the decimals in your chart data after you set min and max values under Charts>Axis. Finally, no longer numbers on the Y Axis!!!

Of course anyone who has a better way or comment on this go for it.

Hi Ryan,

Other than this, your instructions are clear:

Now my values in the chart data were wrong because I changed the number of maximum decimals on the Y axis. So I went into the chart data and changed over the values to 2 decimals:

From $1,200 to $1.2, etc...

A better description would be :

'I calculated a new set of values expressing the amounts in thousands of dollars by dividing the originals by 1000, then set the result to display one decimal place. $1,225 became 1.225, displayed as 1.2. I then used this column of values as the data for the chart.'

Good technique!

Regards,

Barry

PS: The recalculation may be done before or after changing the min/max values on the Y axis.
