A friend of mine recently gave me an old 1st generation Apple TV to sell on eBay. He doesn't remember which size hard drive it has (40GB or 160GB), and I'm having difficulty finding it. Does anyone know where to find that info? Thanks.

From the Apple TV, settings/general/about or from iTunes at the bottom of the window when you select the Apple TV from the device list.

I don't have a TV, so I'm trying to do this only from my mac mini. I have the Apple TV box connected to my network through an ethernet hub. I don't see anything like "Apple TV, settings/general/about" on my computer monitor. I also don't see the device listed anywhere in iTunes, so I don't have any way to select it from within iTunes. Do I have to have a TV to find out what the capacity of the hard drive is?

The 40gb unit is Model No. MA711LL/A
The 160gb unit is Model No. MB189B/A

You can open the device and inspect the drive's labeling, or...you an connect it to the mini, run System Profiler/USB and scan the info there to see if it reveals anything about the hard drive.
Are there any numbers that look anything like MA711LL/A or MB189B/A.

The folllowing instructions assume that your Apple TV is up and running, and is regustered with iTunes. If this is not te case, you'll have to resort to finding and matching model numbers as other posters have inicated. It also applies only to the 1st Generation Apple TV (the silver one).
In iTunes 9 or higher, select the Apple TV that appears in the devices list. There is a capacity bar that shows you what space is used for what media type, but it also indicates the space remaining on the drive. From that, you can deduce the size of the Apple TV's internal hard disk.

With respect, if it wasn't previously used by you, don't you think you should be checking it works before selling it on ebay, during which process you'd discover which model it is.
